What does Mill mean when he says the family is a “school for despotism?
Mill really surprised me throughout his whole argument on the subjection of women. ... Mill is suggesting that the “school of despotism” in a family is the way that this male dominance has been able to last for so long. ... He explains that this despotism (or tyranny) is nourished in the family, because the male is apt to be the leader or ruler of the household and the children and wife are his subjects.
