Barn Burning The article that I chose is entitled “Family and Community in Faulkner’s ‘Barn Burning’”. It is written by M.E. Bradford, and published in the Southern Review. The article focuses on the conflict between Abner and Sarty. The article states that the protagonist in the story is Sarty, and that the narrative focuses on Sarty and the issue of a conflict between himself and his father. The article says that Sarty tries hard to persuade himself that his father will change and become satisfied with life, but the author, Faulkner, lets us know that Abner will never change. Therefore, Sarty must choose to be for or against his father. The article describes Abner Snopes, as envy incarnate. It states that Abner does not want to have anything enjoyed by those who offend him and make him angry. Abner’s envy is one that results in hatred. He wants to destroy those things he is too proud to want, and the people whose values he cannot reproduce. Bradford also uses an example to describe how little is required of Abner.
