The Themes and the Text
Educating Rita is a fascinating study of two people, very different from one another - one of whom seems initially to be unquestionably superior (Frank), the other who seems a battler (Rita) trying to do the impossible. ...
Above all, Educating Rita shows how both Frank and Rita change their perspectives as the story progresses - him learning something about life from her, and feeling his wish to go on restored, and her learning a great deal from him, such that she can start a completely new life. ...
* Beliefs - ironically, it is Rita rather than Frank who believes in the power of learning, the transformative power of education. ... Rita is the stronger of the two, despite her gender. ...
Look at how the two characters think about:
* Self - Rita rebuilds her identity before our very eyes in the course of the play, to the extent of actually changing her name (to Susan). She sets a goal - the new Rita - works away at it, succeeds, and then moves into a new life away from her old contacts, full of confidence in this new self (which is really the confident old Rita, with education and sophistication added).
