What Color Is My Parachute

ABSRACT The exercise I am about to enter “The Flower” is a guide for me as an individual to draw a picture of what would be the ideal work climate to flourish in, as well as, perform at my best possible level. The author of the exercise believes it is much easier to hunt for a job if you have a clear picture of what your ideal job will actually be. I will be following this exercise through a matrix of the petals of a flower; these are used to visualize the actual factors that will help me flourish in the job-environment. At the conclusion of this exercise I will have a clear, concise vision of what will be my ideal job. INTRODUCTION As the spouse of a member of the United States Air Force I have had the opportunity to travel far and wide with the greatest benefits this has to offer. My travels have taken me to beautiful countries where I have had the advantage of being able to submerge into many differing cultures. However, there is side of the story that has always proven to be a challenge. I have not only had to adjust to the new environments, I have had to redefine myself many times over in the working arena. I didn’t always have the advantage of finding the ideal job but would have to settle for finding “a job. I have tried to take advantage of this by delving into different occupations thus proving to myself I could adapt and learn in any circumstance. I am finally coming to a time in my life when my husband will be retiring and I will be able to look for career opportunities that will be long term. I have a wealth of knowledge to pull from and taking this time to dissect what it is I really want to do fits right into the exercise “The Flower” found in What Color is Your Parachute by Richard Nelson Bolles. Through this exercise I will be exploring: my favorite and strongest skills, the geographics of where I would like to work, my favorite interests or any special knowledge I possess, the kind of people I would like to work with or for, what are my favorite values, purposes and goals, what I find are the best working conditions, and the level of salary and responsibility I want to receive. At the conclusion of this exercise I will have a well-defined plan of how to pursue a career path that will fulfill my future desires and point me to the ideal job. PROBLEM STATEMENT As with a majority of Americans I find that I have not been satisfied with the jobs I’ve held or the career path I have been following. Using the rational in this book the author believes you can put aside the Neanderthal approach to job hunting and find the career that will truly make you happy. RESULTS At the center of the flower is a section designated for the skills that are the center of my mission, career or job. I began by writing seven stories from differing stages in my life that were either fun, or gave me a sense of adventure, and sense of accomplishment. After writing the stories I analyzed each for the most transferable skills that I decided were my favorite and then prioritized them. The exercise suggests dividing the skills into three categories; physical skills using primarily my hands or body, mental skills using primarily my mind with data, information, ideas, or subjects, and interpersonal skills which involve primarily using personal relationships to help people or animals, and their needs or problems. Using the three sets of skill keys I asked myself the question: “Did I use this transferable skill in this story?” Through the process of elimination I came up with a list of ten things that needed to be prioritized to figure out which were the most important to me. The following is the final list I have comprised from my favorite and strongest skill from the first to my last: My first favorite and strongest skill is human orientation, I love to work with people and find that I work well within a customer service arena.
