Design

Many of us wonder if the universe is run by a just and righteous being, or by a dark, sinister being. There is no absolute answer to this, but Robert Frost offers us a glimpse of divine intervention when looking at his poem “Design.” This everyday event of survival is used to illustrate irony of the human reliance on, what is thought of as, a righteous and just supreme being. Through his use of color, irony, and structure, Frost entertains the idea of an evil or dark divine being or purpose. Color is used through-out the poem as it is perceived in the western world. Frost begins his poem with “a dimpled spider, fat and white…on a white heal-all” (ln1-2), creating the color illusion of innocence. Both the spider and the flower are made out to be innocent and good. The spider, being described, as a newborn child; and a flower that is generally used for medicinal purposes, leaves the reader with a sense of fairness and righteousness. The description of the moth being “like a white piece of rigid cloth” (ln3) brings forth the images of a satin or lace that can be used for a wedding or baptism.
