Relationship violence is extremely common in today’s society. It is a behavioral pattern that is used to establish power and control over another person. The abuser usually tries to make the other person fearful and intimidated, by using threats or violence. The most common types of abuse may include emotional, physical, sexual and economical abuse. In all cultures men are the most common perpetrators and women are most commonly victims of violence. Emotional abuse has no universally accepted definition. It is based on gaining power and control and making the other person feel worthless. Rejection is one way to emotionally abuse someone. The perpetrator will refuse to acknowledge a person’s presence, value or worth; often making them feel inferior. Degrading someone is also another type of emotional abuse. Degrading can be done in a variety of ways, like: insulting, ridiculing, name-calling, imitating and diminishing the identity and self-worth of another person. Many abusers will try to terrorize their victim by threats or intimidation in order to cause extreme fear in the victim. Isolation is also another type of emotional abuse. The abuser will physically confine their victim to limit their contact with others and limit their own personal freedom. They may lock their victim in a room alone, not permit them to make their own decisions, deprive a partner access to their own money, or they may not allow the victim transportation aids.
