Thirty years ago, it was science fiction—today cloning is a reality. Like so many others, I was completely astonished by the announcement of the successful cloning of an adult sheep, Dolly. Subsequently, the ethics of human cloning has become an issue for discussion. ... Overall, the public reaction to human cloning has been negative; many people still want to draw a distinction between animals and humans.
When speaking of human cloning, what do we mean? Some groups define cloning as a method of producing a baby that has the same genes as its parents. ... Cloning would allow these couples to have children. It is hard to tell someone that they cannot use cloning to have children when no other possible ways to produce offspring are available. Proponents of cloning argue that cloning can be used to help benefit those that are sterile and cannot have children through the normal, natural way.
