A Separate Peace analysis Student: Carlos Ceceña Can war affect even those who are far away from it? This story happens at Devon School where the young characters spend their last high-school year full of good and also catastrophic experiences. In A Separate Peace by John Knowles, this characters: Gene, Finny, Brinker and Leper, defend themselves against unpleasant realities such as war. What happens to Leper to defend himself against these harsh realities is that he goes insane after going to train with the army. Gene describes him when he visits him at his house at Vermont just after Leper escapes from training: “…I noticed the left side of his upper lip lift once or twice as though he was about to snarl or cry. Then I realized that this had nothing to do with his mood, that was involuntary.”(133). This is just one evidence that Leper goes insane.
