“Obladi, Oblada, Life Goes On”
Robert Frost once said, “In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned in life: It goes on. ... Life goes on is also the theme of W. ... In the poem, Auden contrasts life and death to symbolize happiness and suffering and emphasize their extreme opposites. ... There are several run on sentences through the poem, including “Where the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturer’s/ horse/ Scratches its innocent behind on a tree.” These run on sentences create a pattern in the poem and also stress the idea that daily life continues on in the face of tragedy. He also uses short sentences to depict the role of suffering in one’s life.
