ILLUSIONS OF DISASTER “Unkindness may do much,/ and his unkindness may defeat my life,/ But never taint my love” (205). Purity in Shakespeare’s Othello was very hard to come by; represented only in the women and scorned only by the men. In these tragic scenes of love, despair, and vengeance, true heroes and honest love stood above all. Shakespeare’s representation of women in this play was strange for it’s time. While the men were represented as tainted, villainous characters, the women were shown to be true in all things without being weak. “Thou art rash as fire to say/ that she was false. O, she was heavenly true” (247). Why was Shakespeare so different? Historically, women were low and mistreated, but Shakespeare appreciated their true humanity: Lady Macbeth, the three witches, and now Desdemona and Emilia. Iago placed black, backhanded thoughts in all those he came across. From the start he placed the seedlings of competition in Roderigo’s mind when it came to Cassio. Next he contrived a way of getting the handkerchief from Desdemona by using his “love” power over Emilia.
