impact of AAS on scientific understanding of the effects of trace elements

Prior to the development of atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), the scientific understanding of trace elements was limited as the methods and equipment that existed could not detect small concentrations of elements and therefore trace elements went unnoticed. Heavy metal pollution in soil and waterways as well as food, water and soil contaminants could not be detected, and therefore (before AAS) there was an unrecognised health threat.
It was only after scientists started using AAS for measuring concentrations of species in soils, water and organisms that the effects of trace elements were first recognised.
