September 21,2003 Dear Allen£¬ It has been six months since you went back to USA. I miss you so much. How are you doing these days? During the three months after your return, I was busy working on my graduate paper. I spent at least 10 hours in the lab and 2 hours on the way every day. The institution was moved to Zhangjiang and I had to take a bus back and forth. It¡¯s really a hard time for me. At first, my experiment went on well. The protein I worked on was expressed on a good level. But after that, problems came. The yield became lesser and lesser. I tried every method I could think of. But they just didn¡¯t work. Finally I had to turn to a senior student for help and he succeeded in just one try. This really frustrated me. The first project I undertook independently seemed to end in failure, at least from my point of view. But I learned quite a lot from it, not only the lab techniques, but also the way to face difficulties in research work. Still lucky enough, I got an ¡°A¡± for my graduate paper which was anyhow a great gratification after so much hard work.
