Side Airbags
Cortney Schafer
Crash tests on vehicles with side airbags show that many of the nearly 10,000 Americans killed each year in side-impact collisions could be saved, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said. Tests have proven that side airbags make a big impact on life or death in the incident of an accident. ... Most cars perform well in head on collision tests ran by the Insurance Institute on Highway Safety but perform very poorly in the side collision tests. Even a side-impact crash into a rigid object such as a tree or a telephone pole, a fairly common occurrence, at a speed of just 18 miles per hour is severe enough to kill passengers in vehicles without side airbags, the Institute said.
