one is the loniest number

Swandelyn Gardner English 102 Casey Hayes 7 October 2003 One is the loneliest number A song writer once wrote “one is the loneliest number” and many people would be inclined to agree. One person who supports this idea is Walt Whitman. Whitman tells the story of how an oak tree thrives despite being alone. In Whitman’s poem “I Saw in Louisiana a Live-Oak Growing” he uses the oak tree’s solitude to contrast the human need for others. Whitman uses this poem to express that unlike the tree, humans need the interaction, companionship, and love of others in order to have a full existence. The first obvious contrast between the tree and humans is stated in the opening lines of the poem.
