Marxism: The Labour Theory of Value
Karl Marx was a political theorist who had a great lasting impact on the world through his writings. His economic and social theories changed the way we see capitol and labour today, and inspired many revolts and revolutions. Marx’s labour theory of value was one of his main theories and must be examined to truly understand Marxism. In this essay I will attempt to explain what Marx meant when he said that work commodifies the worker, labour alienates the labourer and that the bosses make profit by exploiting their employees.
One of the labour theory of value’s key components was how it explains commodification. ... For example if a carpenter makes a table in an hour, then his labour is worth the value of that table. ... As he wrote,
“The more a worker produces, the less he can consume; the more value he creates, the less he has… Labour produces fabulous things for the rich, but misery for the poor.
