I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth. I come from a family that has struggled to achieve its place in society. Each one of us, parents, and children, have had to sweat and forgo so many things that many others around us enjoy with deep relish. It has been a struggle all the way. When my father became a mechanical engineer in the Pakistan army, he was thought to have made a magnificent achievement. Through sheer hard work, diligence and perseverance, the son of a humble office clerk had become a sophisticated, suave and educated man, something my forefathers had been unable to do. Having been brought up in such a family of individuals, it is perhaps not surprising that today I myself am at the threshold of a gigantic leap, maybe even more magnificent than the one my father made. Given my background, it was not surprising then that excellence in academics has always been greatly stressed upon at home. I have worked hard at my academics and some excellent results in my ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels exams earned a place at Aitchison College, widely regarded as Pakistan’s Eton, and later on, a scholarship at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), an institute that has its fair share of Rhodes scholars in both alumni and faculty. At Aitchison, I studied my way onto both the Headmaster’s and Principal’s Honour lists and was appointed an editor of the college magazine, ‘The Aitchisonian’. While at LUMS I was twice placed on the Dean’s Honour list.
