The Arcata Promise Monologue LAURA - (Standing centre-stage, looking distressed, in a tableau.) (After five seconds, the scene comes to life.) I came to live with you because I loved you. (Walks DSR.) I stayed with you because I loved you. (Stops walking.) (Pause.) (Looks at audience reprovingly.) I endured you because I couldn’t imagine life without you. (Pause.) (Turns away from audience. Walks DSL while talking.) I feel battered. Ignored. Belittled. (Pause.) (Looks at audience.) I didn’t care for you because you were a famous actor. You remember talking about that party where we met? (Reaches out a hand while asking the question.) Well, (takes hand back,) when you came over and talked to me - I thought I’d never seen a man so haunted. So defensive and uptight. (Clenches fists.) (Pause.) I never thought you’d find me attractive. (Turns away from audience and walks USR to pour a glass of water for herself. Pours water.) I never thought you’d see me again. (Shrugs shoulders, and drinks water.) (Pause.) (Turns to audience.) When you asked me to, I said yes for you. (Leans forward and points to audience at "you".) Not because I was impressed, or flattered, or anything like that.
