In The Handmaid’s Tale, television is the main means of information in the society. This is because television is a visual source that does not require any form of reading. Some women, such as handmaids, are not allowed to read in Gilead. This is because handmaid’s serve only one purpose and that is to produce a child with the Commander due to their ability to reproduce. They cannot have any fun or entertainment and therefore have to focus on producing a child. This is similar to slaves in the 1800’s who were forced to work and do nothing else. By enforcing certain rules, the handmaids can focus entirely on their job which is produce a child. Another reason why handmaid’s are not allowed to read is because by reading, they can easily increase their knowledge and become more educated.
