For your writing assignment I want you to go to the library (or online) and get a research article from a peer-reviewed journal that deals with some aspect of biology. Once you have this article I want you to read it and try to understand the material. This will be next to impossible (if you got the right type of article). Read it again. Concentrate on the introduction (where the background information is given), the results and the discussion. The writing part of the assignment is to rewrite the abstract for the article in a way that lets me know you understand the major conclusions of the article’s research. Now for a few clarifications: What is a peer-reviewed journal? A peer-reviewed journal is a journal that sends out all research articles submitted for publication to independent reviewers (experts in the particular field) for comments and acceptance or rejection. Examples are Nature, Science, Journal of Neuroscience, American Journal of Physiology, JAMA, New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Journal of Comparative Neurology, the Auk, and many more.
