Modern Art in Europe and America AHA 271 Fall 2003 T, Th 11-12:15 106 Pickard Hall John Klein 109 Pickard Hall, 882-9532 kleinj@missouri.edu Office hours: W 3-5, or by appointment The purpose of this course is to familiarize you with the major movements in modern art in Europe, the United States and Mexico from about 1885-1940. We begin with Post-Impressionism in France and will finish with the migration of European artists to the U.S. in the 1930s, and the consequent establishment of New York as the center of avant-garde art. Painting and sculpture will be our main focus, with some consideration given to architecture and less to photography; either of these topics merits a separate course. We will concentrate on the best-known artists, but many less-familiar figures--especially women--will also be brought into sight within (or against) the stronger light cast by the major artists of this period according to the way its history has usually been written.
