NW content analysis
The magazine I chose to analyse is NW September 8, 2003 (Volume 11 Number 36) issue. The one thing that caught my interest with this magazine is that it is totally devoted to celebrities as compared to the other magazines available here in Australia.
NW is a weekly magazine published by ACP Publishing Pty Ltd, sold for a reasonably $3. ... Their annual subscriptions are the same or less than a single magazine and, of course, their content is refreshed regularly.
The objective of this magazine is mainly to sell gossip stories to the readers. ...
By dissecting the layout of this magazine I found that the pictures outdo the text-content in size and significance. ... Possibly the headlines are just a gimmick to get the buyer to purchase the magazine when they glance through it at the newsstand.
The majority of images of the female celebrities pictured in the magazine show them scantily clad and in revealing clothes. ...
The NW is 88 pages, with stories and advertisement. NW stories ranges from fashion, diet, sex, relationships, religion, beauty tips, cosmetic surgery and others mostly revolving around the celebrities.
The amount of celebrities dominates the content of this magazine. Even though this is an Australian magazine the foreign celebrities gets more coverage. ...
Out of the 88 pages in the magazine, 73% or 65 pages of the magazine are devoted to celebrities, while 37% or 33 pages of the magazine is devoted to advertising. ...
In a way, the magazine is being hypocritical when it comes to body image and weight. On the one hand, it encourages people to lose weight and maintain a thin body image by printing images of overly underweight celebrities and giving details of the extreme lengths that these celebrities go through to maintain that look, yet on the other hand the magazine applauds and praises other celebrities who have put on weight and maintained a healthy, natural and realistic body image.
