Since the 1970’s the focus of the Gay Rights Movement has been ever changing. One of the major topics of debate today is same sex marriage: Should the relationships of gay and lesbian couples embody the same legitimacy that is guaranteed in heterosexual marriages? Aside from the gains of social and self-identity, the institution of marriage offers many legal and business securities. Without a legal recognition of commitment, the partners of gay or lesbian citizens are often denied any form of spousal treatment in the realm of professional and personal business. Marriage can be defined as an intimately monogamous lifetime partnership between two adults: Why should this statement apply different circumstances for heterosexual and homosexual couples that have made the same promise? ... Hence, in a business sense, gay and lesbian lifetime partners deserve the identical acceptance and entitlement that is bestowed upon heterosexual married couples. ... Heterosexual couples receive many legal remedies when they enter into marriage. ... Another legal respect of marriage is child custody and protection. ... Furthermore, children of gay couples are not eligible for legal protection in the event of a biological parents death or if the relationship disolves.
