The Times bfi London Film Festival 2003 takes place on the earlier dates of 22 October - 6 November. Turner Classic Movies (TCM), together with The Times bfi London Film Festival are again running the Classic Shorts competition. TCM Classic Shorts provides a showcase for the directors of the future, and is judged by a panel of industry critics. They say some of the best ideas are born whilst relaxing. Archimedes came up with his theory in the bath, Michael Heseltine famously sketched out the details of his political career on a napkin and the London Film Festival (LFF) came about after a dinner party in 1956. The British Film Institute (BFI) was keen on the idea and with the National Film Theatre (NFT) about to open, they had their venue. The first London Film Festival duly opened in 1957, the day after the opening of the brand new NFT. The Sunday Times paid for it and 15 films, none of them British, were shown. There were obviously some impressive films.
