A Night at the Opera
For most of us, when we hear the words “Classical Singing” or “Opera” our conditioned minds are instantly directed towards the words “snooze” or “ Fat ladies in costumes”. Jerry Seinfeld was once quoted “I dont like the opera. ... Clearly, classical singing (otherwise known as opera) can be described as a true fine arts form simply because it takes countless hours of dedication and schooling to acquire the skills needed, it is a risky business that constantly puts you on the line, and its performances are seen continuously throughout the world by millions of spectators. ... For those of you who feel most of this opera lingo is all Greek to you, it probably is. In fact, Opera singers often learn at least 3 other languages in college besides their native language so they can accurately sing the text in the pieces they perform. “Opera in English is, in the main, just about as sensible as baseball in Italian”(Mencken, 1). ... L Mencken was humorously trying to detract his audience from the public’s desire to listen to an opera in English.
Although practice schedules, schooling, and vocal training sessions at the opera are treacherous, they are nothing compared to the criticism and negativity you must learn to take with a stiff upper lip in the opera world.
