During the role of the 1950’s civil rights movement racism, poverty and minorities played a major role in the dreams of many Americans. The brutal treatment that many faced and their will to become something better is shown throughout the short stories “The Sky is Gray” and “The Hammon and the Beans”. They both prevail how society was back in the civil era. Minorities were not given the opportunities or advantages white people had. They suffered and had to learn to be strong no matter what life threw at them. In the short story “The Sky is Gray”, is told in first person by an eight-year-old whose life is in the world of racism. He has to play the role of his father who died in the war, and take charge of the household. His mother Octavia is a strong black women who will not let anyone feel sorry for her family, and teaches her son not to let anything bother him. He was raised to make sacrifices anytime he had to. “I can’t eve be scared and I can’t ever cry. And that’s the reason I didn’t never say nothing ‘bout my teef. It been hurting me and hurting me close to a month now . But I didn’t say it. I didn’t say it cause I didn’t want to act like no cry-baby, and cause I know us didn’t have ‘nough money to have it pulled”(Gaines,pg.109). James is showing that he wants to be strong for his family and he understands that they can’t afford the dentist, so he pretends to act like nothing is wrong.
