The character of Raven in This Gun for Hire is a desensitized, trained murderer who became this way as a result of his extremely traumatic childhood. His jaded persona is derived from his past, but by the end of the movie is seen as more of a hero who is able to function outside of the law. This type of character that is sympathized with more than despised is a main feature of movies from the transition into the Film Noir era. Raven’s awful childhood experiences molded him into the person that he came to be as an adult. As a young child, he was the victim of many brutal beatings from his aunt, who he lived with. Raven then seeks revenge in killing her, and feels fine in doing so. Many experts have found that “The fantasy of retributive injury to parents applies in youths who are sensitized by humiliation and emotional rejection and whose dependency wishes are hidden under a shell of apparent hardness” (Bromberg: 95).
