Calypso and Odysseus
So far the book that has caught my attention the most in the odyssey is book five. ... The extract mainly deals with Nymph Calypso releasing Odysseus from her island. The Nymph is not willing to let Odysseus go but under the commands and treats of Zeus brought to her by Hermes is not for her a choice to make. Thus, she goes to Odysseus telling him that she has chosen to release him of her island. ... Possibly, they do this as for gaining personal merit, for example Calypso might have said this to Odysseus so he keeps her in high regard, furthermore he might even talk about her good faith to others that might also keep her memory alive. ...
Further in the passage we find that Odysseus is reluctant to go, he believes that the Nymph is playing a trick on him. ... Ah, but he sure can make love to her every night even do he is not willing, as the passage itself says, “he’d sleep with her in the arching cave-he had no choice- /unwilling lover alongside lover all too willing…” Probably on Greek standards this might be totally understandable, taking into account that one of the most desired things a man could get was his name honored and immortalized in the mouths of men, thus Odysseus was more than expected to reject immortality and weep because of his captivity, although I suspect that he could have escaped if he really wanted to, if he worked in the raft instead of weeping all day.
