Weathering Sediments In Lab 5 we experimented with sedimentation and cementation, as well as the rate of sedimentation. In the first part of the lab we set out to make out own rock. To stimulate sediment we used some gravel and sand. To create the actual rock we needed something to speed up the lithification process. To solve this problem we used Plaster of Paris mixed with water. Gypsum, which is heavily contained in Plaster of Paris, is essentially the same thing as anhydrite. Anhydrite is the cementing material that is used in nature. After we mixed the ingredients together in a bowl, we let the mixture sit until it hardened. The approximate time in which it took our rock to harden was 5 minutes.
