CANONICAL CRITICISM
Introduction
Many times we heard the word canonical. ... Do you know what means canonical ? First we will see more about ¡°canonical ¡± in order to apply this method with some examples on the first book of the Bible, Genesis. Where is coming from this term of canonical? ... In the next lines I will clarify more regarding ¡°canonical criticism¡± The word "criticism" is often taken by the public to imply negative judgment. Hence "canonical criticism" is often taken to mean negative judgment against the Bible. Yet it is not necessary to gather this meaning from the use of the word "criticism." When the various types of biblical criticism are considered carefully it becomes clear that canonical criticism helps us to arrive at a clearer understanding of the meaning and relevance of the Bible.
Scholars use the word "criticism" in a slightly different sense than that which is implied in common use. ... The task of the canonical critic, then, is not to find fault with the Bible but to understand it more fully.
Etymology
As early as the 2d century, Christians could speak of the Bible as "canonical," as well as divinely "inspired. ... Something "canonical" may not yet be situated in a fixed list or collection of similar canonical things. So, biblical traditions and even whole books may be viewed as "canonical" long before they belong to a fixed "canon" or list of such books. ... Now canonical is a term related to canon.
Definition
