This experiment was carried out with the main aim of distinguishing and categorising chromosomes into their different stages of mitosis in a garlic root tip, and also to perform a count of cell category on a commercial cell.
Methods
In order to use a light microscope to view chromosomal detail, a squash preparation performed on the tissue was essential. This was carried out using the meristematic tip of a garlic root.
A segment, approximately 1mm was cut from the root tip using a scalpel, and placed with tweezers on a microscope slide.
