Mallory Bruns WRT 105 Unit I Paper The courtyard located between the dormitories of Boland and Brewster and the Brockway Dinning Hall is an outdoor area accessible to the general public, especially Syracuse students. The patio is open and has several benches to accommodate many people. As a result, it would seem that the spot would attract large numbers of individuals hoping to take pleasure in agreeable weather or fresh outdoor air. However, this does not seem to be the case. Generally speaking, at any one time, no more than fifteen people populate the spacious terrace. However, this number deviates slightly because some individuals might only utilize the patio to travel from one place to another and not to take pleasure in the actual area. Small numbers of people, usually in groups of two or three, can be seen sitting on benches or leaning against walls. Although, the outdoor space is communal, it does not appear that the general public often uses the patio. The average person that utilizes the area is usually a Boland or Brewster resident between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five. The general population includes males and females of all classes and races. Although, any citizen can access the courtyard, the area was built by and for Syracuse University and is located directly next to student facilities. Not surprisingly, the design of the college quad appears to be have been created with the student population in mind. The courtyard seems to exist simply to provide a practical area for people to be outside. The space, like the surrounding student buildings, is architecturally simple but functional. Cement or concrete appears to be the theme and everything from the walls to the floors is constructed of this type of material.
