Chaim Potok’s The Chosen
Vocation
A vocational decision is the determination for the path all human beings will take throughout their lives. Vocation in Chaim Potok’s The Chosen is determined by many different factors, as seen in the lives of the boys Danny and Reuven. In the case of each boy, such influences as family, tradition, passions, community, and ability help each boy to strengthen their skills and give them more of a desire to succeed in their selected vocation. ... This conclusion can also be derived by the influence of Reuven’s father, who helps constitute his vocation in a more indirect way, as it is his choice to become a rabbi in contrast to the desire of his father, who wishes him to become a professor or mathematician. ... Family, tradition, community, and ability are all very important in each boy’s selected vocation, but their passion is dominant, which in turn is very significant in the decisions made in each boy’s life. ... ’” Thus, it is clear that it isn’t factors such as family or abilities which ultimately influence Reuven in his vocation, but the inner desire within his heart which drives him. ... Despite his father’s apprehension and negative feelings with his son’s selected path, the indirect influence Reuven receives from his father is crucial in his vocation. ... Thus, Reuven’s character is influenced by his passion in his father’s acceptance and the character which his father produces, mainly concerning the method of teaching his son the Talmud, leading Reuven to the vocation of becoming a rabbi.
