It was, without question, a tough decision for the Red Sox to make after falling just one victory shy of the franchise's first World Series appearance in 17 years. But in the end, general manager Theo Epstein, principal owner John W. Henry, president/CEO Larry Lucchino and chairman Tom Werner came to the joint decision that Little wasn't the right long-term solution to manage the Red Sox. Little had let it be known that he didn't want to manage under the same circumstances in 2004 that he did this season. If he was to come back, he wanted security. And more than that, he wanted to know in no uncertain terms that he had the complete backing of his superiors.
