The Age of Reason
(1660-1780)
The most striking quality of the 17th century was its optimism. ... For this reason the name of “Augustan” was given the early 18th century. The century has also been called the age of Enlightenment. ... In England, it was knows as “the age of reason”. People in this age were concerned with manners and morals, with understanding themselves. It was the age that advocated the use of scientific methods to test old theories and develop new knowledge.
This age can be divided into 3 periods:
1) The Early years, (1660-1700)
This period started when king Charles II returned to the English throne with French customs. ...
3) The Late Years, (1744-1780)
King George III attempted, largely without success, to regain the royal powers that had been assumed by Parliament. ... Samuel Johnson, Although many of the ideas and literary modes of the age of reason lasted through the 18th century, by it’s second half changes had began to occur. The signs of a new age, the Romantic age, appeared with Thomas Gray.
