The novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, was so popular when it came out that only four years later, in 1963, the Peter Brook film was made. ... The transfer from book to movie affected the plot and setting, character development, and symbolism.
The plot of the movie remains very true to the book, however some pieces have been taken out. For example, the boy with the birthmark on his face who first tells the assembly about the “beastie,” is not included, or stressed as much, in the movie. In the book, he shows the beginning of the strong sense of fear on the island and is the first to die (from the fire). Also, when they create the fire for the first time, it does not seem to be as much of a blaze as in the book. The movie’s fire doesn’t seem too fierce, while in the book, an entire section of forest is burned, resulting in the death of the birthmark boy. This movie also adds at least one thing: Piggy’s story time. In the book, the reader knows that Piggy tells stories to and takes care of the littluns, but does not see it happen.
