1.0 intro In 1950’s Ken Kesey wrote a novel, which would become a classic. The book was based around Kesey experiences in a mental institute in America. The book shows that the patients are put down and taken out of the view of society. In Australia there was the same mentality towards the attitude ill as in America. This report will examine whether there have been improvements to the treatment of the mentally ill since damning novel. 2.0 investigations 2.1 Types of mental illness Mental illness is split up into several different sections, affective disorders, anxiety disorders, schizophrenic disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, sexual dysfunction, sleep disorders. 2.1.1 Affective disorders are disorders in which bipolar disorders and major depression. The bipolar disorder is know as manic depression. This disorder causes periodic mood swings from depression to mania. The depression is described as lack of motivation, difficulty in doing tasks, short attention span, decreased appetite, crying, sleeplessness or sleeping too much, and in severe cases thoughts of self-harm. The mania is separated into two groups full mania, hypomania. Mania is described by less need to sleep, decreased self-control, overspending, increased sexual activity, irritability, rage, risk-taking behaviour, and in severe cases psychotic states. Hypomania is the same behaviour but in a lesser degree. (www.mentalhealth.com) 2.1.2 Anxiety disorder is panic and social phobias e.g. obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). OCD makes the sufferer have repetitious thoughts and behaviours about particular ideals. Affects 2 percent of the population and is more common than schizophrenia and bipolar disorder or panic disorder. It can develop n any age group but usually develops in teenagers and young adults. Biological factors are the main contributor to the disorder. Schizophrenia is known as “split personality”. This is not true. The word actually means splitting of the mind. That the patient will have two or more delusions or hallucinations (visual or auditory), disorganized speech, and disorganized behavior. This means that the patient will live in different worlds, one might be the real world and one a world created by his sub-conscious. This problem develops gradually and is treatable. (www.mentalhealth.com) 2.1.4 Eating disorders, personality disorder, sexual dysfunction and sleep disorders are a small percent of the mental illness. Eating disorders such as anorexia is where the patient sees something different in the mirror to what everyone else sees. Personality disorder are life long conditions, in which personality traits are so inflexible and maladaptive that they cause social and occupational impairments and can cause distress to others as well as patient. Sexual dysfunction can be impotence in some cases if the person with the problem feels inadequate. There is quite a few sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, which will make the person fall asleep suddenly without warning. These can seriously affect patient’s personal life. (http://www.raderprograms.com/causes.htm) 2.2 Treatment 2.2.1 Medication Medication has become an important part of treatment for the mentally ill. The new drugs that have been brought out (e.g. Lithium) allow the patients to come out on there own and only need to have periodic checks on medication dosage.
