     The Mafia is an organization that very important to the history of the United States, though not in the sense as everyone knows it. The typical way of thinking of the Mafia is a lawless band of Italian thugs, running around in pinstripe tuxedos killing anyone who dares to interfere in their business. This is not exactly a false way of thinking, but the fact remains that the Mafia has been a very important role in World War II and as such should be recognized both for the good and bad things it has done for the America of today.
     The Mafia has its roots in the island of Sicily, Italy and the Italian immigrants who moved to the United States looking for better economic opportunities. ... In Sicily, the Mafia was lawless, and since Italian police were so easy to bribe, they were able to get away with much more than the American branch. However, the American Mafia accomplished much greater things than any Mafioso in Italy was able to aid the American war effort.
     The Mafia in America when it was first formed was comprised of about 250 “families”. The term “family”, used loosely, is a Mafia unit, usually run by members of one blood-related family. ...

     The Mafia is, in the simplest way of thinking, a gang, in which every member is sworn to absolute secrecy and is totally loyal to every other member in the gang. However, thinking of the Mafia as a gang does not do it true justice. The Mafia was usually a citywide organization, unopposed by any force, and responsible for all major criminal actions taken in the city.
