Journal on “Base Details”
By Siegfried Sassoon
In the poem “Base Details” by Siegfried Sassoon, he describes the immorality, lack of concern and care the Generals and Majors exemplified in the war. ... Using the word “base” in his title, it means headquarters, where the soldiers retreat and live as well as cruelty, greed and the absence of higher values which the Majors embody.
Sassoon describes the Majors as “bald, short of breath” showing his hate and contempt for them when he perceives them as unpleasant people as their personalities and intentions are.
