Unit 3 DBQ After the Revolutionary war in which the American colonists defeated the British, questions lingered on how to form a new government. The people of the United States quickly established the Articles of Confederation which would end up being a mixed blessing to the colonists. The representatives of the thirteen states agreed to create a confederacy called the United States of America, in which each state maintains its own sovereignty and all rights to govern, except those rights specifically granted to Congress. Over time it was noticed that the federal government was too weak to effectively govern the states under its authority, which led to several proposals for reform and eventually led to the constitutional convention. The government was not given much power because majorities of the people were afraid of a strong central government which would resemble the rule that the British had over them. Several documents describe the positive and negative effects of the Articles of Confederation. Topic: "From 1781 to 1789 the Article of Confederation provided the United States with an effective government." Document 1 One document which was a positive effect of the Articles of Confederation was the Paris Peace Treaty of 1783…..”There shall be a firm and perpetual peace between his Brittanic Majesty and the said states, and between the subjects of the one and the citizens of the other, wherefore all hostilities both by sea and land shall from henceforth cease. All prisoners on both sides shall be set at liberty, and his Brittanic Majesty shall with all convenient speed, and without causing any destruction, or carrying away any Negroes or other property of the American inhabitants, withdraw all his armies, garrisons, and fleets from the said United States, and from every post, place, and harbor within the same; leaving in all fortifications, the American artilery that may be therein; and shall also order and cause all archives, records, deeds, and papers belonging to any of the said states, or their citizens, which in the course of the war may have fallen into the hands of his officers, to be forthwith restored and delivered to the proper states and persons to whom they belong.” The Treaty of Paris negotiated peace between the United States and Great Britain, ended the revolutionary war and recognized American independence.
