Robert Reich’s essay “Why the Rich are getting Richer and the Poor, Poorer” was very accurate to the American economy. I believe that his essay was accurate at the time he wrote it. Today’s economy is exactly the way Reich wrote it some twelve years ago. Reich explains that a workers role in society will determine what kind of financial success one will have. He also discussed that all American’s salaries were equally proportional. Today there are enormous gaps in financial brackets. There are the multi billion dollar people that include the infamous Bill Gates, Rockefeller, and the Sam Walton family. There are also the derelict that are every where that touch the land. In between are the blue collar workers of America. Reich puts all people with jobs into three categories of workers. There are production workers, in-person services, and symbolic analysts. He also mentions that the production workers and in-person services are not doing as well as symbolic analysts. He explains the reasons behind this stagnant job market. He explains that the two major impacts are technology and communication. The internet has revolutionized the communication world. Even those who are thousands of miles away, in the middle of nowhere, can be right in the middle of current events. Reich explains in further detail that production workers jobs were declining. He also mentions that they are paid the least and work the most. Technology and third world labor are the reasons for the decline in jobs.
