The ritual, liturgy and meaning of Yom Kipper
Yom Kippur is probably the most important holiday of the Jewish year. Yom Kippur, the
Day of Atonement, comes on the tenth day of the Jewish month of Tisheri (September/
October). ... Actually, the Torah calls it Yom Kippurim. ... It
is believed that those who have not been good enough to be written in the Book of Life
immediately on Rosh HaShanah are given ten days to repent, pray for forgiveness, and do
good deeds until Yom Kippur, when their fate will be
decided. The Bible does not make any definitive connection between Yom Kippur and
any historic event, but one tradition holds that it was on the tenth of Tishri that Moses
came down from Mount Sinai to find Aaron and the Israelites dancing and reveling and
worshipping the golden calf.
