This thesis uses the Counseling group approach to help clients with HIV/AIDS deal with the many traumatizing issues they have or may face in the past, present, and future. This group will also help the clients deal with the many stereotypes that go along with coming in contact with the HIV virus. ... While running an AIDS based group the group leader is bound to come in contact with carriers of the HIV virus. ...
My role as a group leader: As a group leader in an HIV/AIDS group, I will have to research the many ways in which the disease is contracted, and what kinds of symptoms are associated with the virus. ... As a group leader, I should also be aware of the many treatments available to my clients to help the progression process of the disease a little bit easier and more bearable.
The group facilitator will also have to develop a safe and confidential environment which will allow clients to feel welcome, and share any thoughts, fears, or concerns they may be having. The group facilitator must possess a lot of sympathy towards clients feeling, and emotions.

They will get to know others who are in the same sort of situation, and may feel accepted among the group. ... They may also see others in the group getting emotional and figure that it is o. ... to be this way in the group. ... For instance, if a client is always defending themselves, and there for has a hard time trusting people, group therapy is helpful because the client will not have to defend themselves, because everyone in the group is in the same boat as them.
How group therapy can help individuals suffering from HIV/AIDS: Group therapy can be an extremely helpful thing for suffering clients. ... For example, in the group there may be an age range from 30-50yrs. If the 30 year old client has just been diagnosed, the doctor may say he/she only has 10 yrs to live, but in the group the client hears stories of other clients who have had the disease for a long period of time, and they are still alive enjoying long lives.
