The Revolution of 1800 was monumental in the devolvement of the United States. It was named with the declaration of the first Democratic-Republican to office. His name was Thomas Jefferson. During the time frame of 1801-1817, two Republican administrations, run by Jefferson and Madison illustrate the difference between the two parties of the era. With respect to the federal Constitution, the Jeffersonian Republicans were usually characterized as strict constructionists who were opposed to the broad constructionism of those like Hamilton and Adams. Through social, economical, and political examination of the two parties, this characterization is seen to be quite accurate. The Jeffersonian Republicans envisioned a society in contrast to that of their Federalist counterparts. Concerning religion, the Constituion merely states that one has free practice, therefore Jefferson believed that the religious power must lie within the state and within the dictates of ones own mind.
