I thought that “The things they carried” was a rather boring story. One reason that I thought it was boring was because they talked about the things that they carried for about half the story. One thing that I noticed while reading “The things they carried” is the fact that the story is written in third person, limited omniscient. The narrator is not actually in the story, merely telling us of the events, and yet we still get to see inside Lieutenant Cross’s mind to more accurately picture his feelings. The narrator also, although letting us see the innermost, personal thoughts of Cross, always refers to the Lieutenant as either "he,” "him," or "Lieutenant Cross," never speaking of him by only his first name, which seems formal. Even after they stopped talking about the things they carried I still thought it was boring because it lacked anything interesting. When I first began to read this story I thought that it was just going to a boring story but I was wrong. Paul's Case is about a young, Calvinist man who did not feel that he belonged in his life. Paul felt that his abusive father, uncaring teachers, and classmates who misunderstand him aren't worthy of his presence and company. One of the reasons Paul may not have fit in was because there is a chance that he was learning disabled. When He took the deposit down to the bank, Paul pocketed nearly one thousand dollars from the cash in the deposit. The company would not get the ledger back until Monday, so Paul knew he had time to get away.
