Lord of the Flies Set on an uncharted island in the 1940's, William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies is based on a group of boys who have to find ways to survive in a place of no shelters or adults. In the beginning of the book, the boys first arrive on the island with many fears, such as what was going on in the world around them, the fear of being left alone on the island and not being found on the island. They later develop the fear of the beast. What's ironic about the beast is that the beast is only what the boys make of it. " 'Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill!"..."You knew didn’t you? I'm part of you?...I'm the reason why its no go?' " One of the main characters, Ralph is a very kind-hearted, caring person and is soon chosen to hold the responsibility of the leader and is soon faced with certain decisions that will affect him the rest of the time they are on the island.
