GENDER REFORM IN SOUTH AFRICA

INTRODUCTION
South African women has until recently suffered far worse oppression than their male counterparts have ever experienced. In the year 1994, the year following 1993 Conference on Human Rights in Vienna, reforms in the gender arena has had a high level of priority. ... After 1994 it took another four years to pass the Employment Equity Act and another year to start implementing this act which promotes fair treatment by prohibiting unfair discrimination on the basis of "race, gender, pregnancy, marital status, family responsibility, ethnic or social origin, colour, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, HIV status, conscience, belief, political opinion, culture, language, and birth. ... ) has since 1980 shown no significant rise which could indicate the elevation of the status of women in South Africa.
