Magic The Gathering Magic: The Gathering was created by Richard Garfield of Wizards of the Coast, Inc., based in Seattle, Washington. MTG was the first collectible card game. It was introduced in 1993. While trading cards like baseball players have been around for ages, it is the idea of playing a game with these cards that was new when MTG was created. The game was originally based on the fantasy styles Dungeons & Dragons but the rules are very different. Games usually finish in well under an hour and an online version exists. The success of this game prompted a wave of similar games in the 1990s – especially Pokemon. In Magic, two or more players play the roles of “planeswalkers” duelling to the death. Every player has life points.
