As I was contemplating how I would approach this speech, I started thinking about what I though was really important to be a good leader. Of course there are many characteristics of leaders that we have touched base on during the last four weeks of this class, but I thought building loyalty and trust among your team to be at the top of my list followed closely by good people skills. These are some characteristics I would like to see in a leader. Trust is the single most important factor in building personal and professional relationships. Trust implies accountability, predictability, and reliability. More than anything else, your employees want to believe in and trust their leaders. People first must believe in you before they will follow your leadership. Loyalty must be earned. It is earned by caring about and protecting employees and bosses. It is earned by working with people and helping them be successful. The loyalty and dedication of employees can help leaders meet tight deadlines or solve difficult problems. You can buy a man’s time, you can even buy his physical presence at a given place, but you cannot buy enthusiasm…you cannot buy loyalty…you cannot buy the devotion of hearts, minds or souls. A leader must earn these. Leaders must trust and accept the people they lead; such acceptance requires tolerance of imperfection. Anybody can lead perfect people.
