Throughout the Gospel of John many themes arise as a result of different situations. In the chapters of special study (7,8,9,13,17,19) the main themes are ‘hour’, ‘discipleship’, ‘exhalation’, ‘light’, ‘replacement’, ‘Jesus’ identity’, ‘authority of Jesus’, ‘belief’, ‘glory’, ‘spirit’ and ‘water’.
A theme that plays a prominent part in John’s gospel is the theme ‘hour’. We understand the ‘hour’ in terms of Jesus’ death and no one can act upon the hour of Jesus until Gods time is right. This emerges throughout John’s gospel, as in many situations Jesus emphasises that his “time is not yet here”. When emphasisng this, Jesus is trying to illustrate that his ‘hour’ which is the anticipated time his events will occur has not yet come. As mentioned before the event that will occur is Jesus’ death, the hour of when the Son of God is glorified, it is the hour of the fulfillment of the predictions of Jesus and when Jesus departs from this world to the Father.
