Presidents in our history have very scandalous historical records, and two have faced an impeachment trial. People such as Andrew Johnson, Warren Harding, Richard Nixon, and Bill Clinton that has brought such shamefulness to the United States. These acts caused other nations to not take America seriously. If these acts of foolishness never happened than maybe the citizens would vote more in elections. How can we ever believe a word the presidents have to say now? Andrew Johnson Andrew Johnson was born in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1808.Growing up poor his mother wanted him and his brother to be a tailor. But he ran away. He open his own shop in Greeneville, Tennessee. There he married Eliza McCardle. He became a skillful public speaker, beating the common man and rich plantation owners. In the 1840’s and 50’s, he was a member of the House of Representatives and the Senate. During the secession crisis, Johnson remained in the Senate even when Tennessee seceded. This made him a hero in the North and a enemy in the eyes of most southern people. So his wife and two daughters were driven out of the state. He was appointed Military Governor of Tenn. By President Lincoln in 1862.He became our 17th president after Lincoln’s death in 1865(after the Civil War had ended). He neglected to see if the southern states would fully carry out equality to the blacks. He passed out pardons to the southern states called the ‘black codes’ which was calling slavery by another name. In 1866, Congress passed the Freedmen's Bureau Bill, providing shelter and provision for ex-slaves and protection of their rights in court, as well as the Civil Rights Act, defining all people including Negroes, that was born in the U.S. as citizens. Because congress was getting fed up with the President’s racists acts against the black people they passed the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which states the federal government should protect the rights of the citizens. Congress also passed the Tenure of Office Act, which can remove the president’s power without the approval of the Senate. Johnson attempted to get back on track by making speech after speech. But at the end of all his attacked his opponents by using fail language. This didn’t get him anywhere, so he decided to challenge to the Tenure of Office Act. As direct disagreement to the act, he fired Secretary of War Stanton. In 1868, Congress voted to have Johnson impeached, but the Senate didn’t agree. The Reconstruction Acts of 1867 extended suffrage to formerly enslaved male African Americans-completely transforming the American electorate. Andrew Johnson was viewed as the worst possible person to have been president at the end of the Civil War. Hw continued to support his racist views and make remarks regarding the Negroes. The impeachment of Andrew Johnson-the first of only two presidents to be impeached in U.S. history that involved complicated issues of law, politics, and personalities. He died July 31, 1875, Carter's Station, TN. Warren Harding Born, November 2, 1865 in Corsica (Blooming Grove), Ohio. As a young man, Harding brought a nearly bankrupt newspaper, the Marion Star, back to life. The paper became a favorite with Ohio politicians of both parties because of Harding's reporting. July 8, 1891, he was married to Florence Kling DeWolfe. Always well-liked for his good-natured manner., In 1914 ,Harding won a seat in the Ohio State Senate, serving two terms before becoming a U.S. senator.
